Equipment
Let's start by describing the type of equipment I usually use in this type of shots, I will not specify the brands like Nikon and Canon and concentrate more on the types of lenses and cameras and why.
By choice I prefer to stay light even though I always have with me a second photographer or an assistant who takes care of my cameras.
To take pictures at bride's home I use a 24-70 f 2.8 zoom which allows me to cover wide angle to mini tele great for shooting in tight spaces and to make portraits, my camera is the latest generation and has a low noise sensor, and finally I have with me a flash light to give a little bit of fill light.

the history of the preparation

Wedding season

A new wedding season is beginning . Here in Italy the rain is heavy I'm thinking about last year and I have a lot of beautiful pictures in my mind. i'm really a lucky guy. I'm, as always, training to improve my skills and I still love wedding and reportage photography.

Travel Bhutan

After some weeks spent in Bhutan I'm on my way back. Shooting wedding all around Italy and planning new travel around the world.

There something very important to say about my profession, that usually young photographer do not understand completely.
1) Stay organized
2) Control your equipment after every trip
3) Think about your software skills, the world is changing and you have to change if you wanto to continue to work
4) Invest in marketing and take a look to social media
5) Remeber that you are on a net of players

My days in Bhutan seems so far away, the quiet of the land the happiness of the people and I'm runnning now...

What not to do when you hire a wedding photographer

I consider myself a commercial artist, with more than 300 weddings under my belt with a lot of enthusiastic couples. I’m member of WPJA, AGWPJA and I won very important awards in editorial and artistic photography, my images are collected by private people and by public institution. When I shoot wedding I really like to feel the love and the magic of the ceremony and of the reception. Usually the brides and grooms that I meet are so nice and enthusiastic about their wedding and we speak about pictures, candid moments, formals. The usually find me from the internet and the y are so happy the I’m going to shoot their weddings. Rarely the ask me a discount.

Once or twice a year I meet some ugly people that ask me an appointment they arrive on late they always criticize the pictures in a not polite and not intelligent way at the end they ask me a 20 to 30 % discount.

I act in a very polite way and I inform the bride and the groom that is not possible and that I’m not going to apply any discount. After two or three days I wrote them an email and I specify that I’m not any more free for their date.

A lot of you will think that I’m completely crazy letting go a lot of money only for proud. I’m not proud I only know that I will do my best for the couples that hire me as photographer and I have to feel the love of that day. If the couple that I’m going to take pictures for is empty, with nothing in their souls well is not a business for me.

Sometimes it happens that an ugly and not polite groom call me at the phone to ask me to go to their wedding but you know when I’m not shooting wedding during the week end I like to stay with my family with a lot of love and happiness around me.

So when you choose your wedding photographer you have to like his pictures. If you choose a wedding photographer only if he will give you a 30% discount you are not on my way.

It’ strange that always happens with very rich people, usually someone who inherit the richness from their parents or grandparents. Someone who does not know the meaning of hard work.

The wedding photographer whish list
Usually I met a lot o couples that are going to get married in Italy few minutes before the wedding ... As a destination wedding photographer I know that is not easy to meet each other before the wedding.

There is something that I would like to tell to all brides and grooms:

1)I really enjoy to meet the bride and the groom before the wedding day for a coffee and a chat. It’ s the first contact, really important to act freely during the wedding. I’m a fly on the wall photographer during the wedding but it’s important to know each other and to understand what the couple think about their weddings. To understand if they want some posed, groups and when they want the photographer to take the pictures;

2) I really like brides that write to me to ask or to explain what they want, knowing the images the dreams help me to give to the couple a better service;
3) There are some brides that send me a little collection of old photos or link to my pictures that they like, they give me an idea of what they like most, so that I can imagine their tastes;

4) Sometimes I meet some grooms that give me a list of the must have images, once a groom give me a list of 36 groups shot to be taken… It was really funny a really though job for me and my assistant;
5) I really like to be connected on Facebook it’s easy to share information and to know a little bit more of each others.

I really know that being a destination Wedding photogtapher in Italy is really a nice job to do and I’m always happy about taking pictures of a wedding.

Best walk-around lens for Wedding Photography

It’s not the equipment that makes a good photographer,but if you’re a wedding photographer, you know that your gear is really important.

So wich is the best lens for your wedding photography business?
Well it’ easy I would like to have a really light lens, a great zoom 16-80mm f 1.8.
O I know this lens does not exist.
So for me the best walk around lens for a wedding photographer is the 24-70 mm f2.8 because cover from a wide angle to a moderate tele for nice portraits.
Nikon and Canon have their nice flagship 24-70mm lenses. So it’s time to save your money to buy a new lens.

Wedding photographer Lake Garda

With Leyla and Alessio we went to the nice little village of Salò and to Garda Island a private nice and exlusive island on lake Garda.
Leyla is from Azerbajan and so she is muslim and the wedding was celebrated at the town hall.

The wedding was simply fabolous.

A lot fo friendly people coming from Italy for Leyla and Alessio wedding and a lot of people coming from Azerbajan.

Leyla and Alessio are really nice. A sunny day, a nice bride and groom and a beautiful lake. Was rellay a nice day.

Lake Garda (Italian: Lago di Garda or Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Venice and Milan.

Salò is a town and comune in the Province of Brescia in the region of Lombardy (northern Italy) on the banks of Lake Garda.

Wedding Photographer Lake Como

What a nice day on Lake Como near Lecco!!!

Laura e Giacomo are so nice!!!

While it was raining the sun broke from the clouds and the lake and the party started...

Lake Como is really a nice location for your wedding day. I really like to take picture to friends.

I met Laura and Giacomo two times, once in my studio and once at their home, before the wedding, they explain me everithing they also give me a PDF wit the plan of the day and a lot of useful informations. They also showed me the picture of the most important people in the wedding. So for me was really easy to understand their whishes... Also a little run with the boat on the lake Como was really a pleasure. It was really a pleasure to work with them.

Back from India

Finally I'm back, the wedding season is starting in Italy and this year I spent a lot of time abroad.

After etiopia I went to India to see the Kumbhamela in Haridwar... I was also in Delhi. I really hoped to se aan indian wedding but I had not enough time to see it.

Travelling with photoamateurs is funny and interesting, you teach them a lot of things and they start to take better pictures.

I really like to travel and to take reportages pictures but unfortunately there is no money for this kind of work.

Better to concentrate on my Wedding Photography Italy business and to prepare some new photo tours.

Sicily

Sicily (Italian and Sicilian: Sicilia) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Wedding Venice ( diaries of a wedding photographer)
For a weding photographer a wedding in Venice is really demanding.
The city is absolutely nice and crowded and you have to find some beautiful places to take some quiet pictures to create a feeling with the bride and the groom.
I had lived in Venice for 4 years and I have a little flat near San Marco Square in the heart of the city, I shot more than 20 wedding in Venice and I'm always looking for something new and unespected. Often the gondola shots are really sterotype. With my pictures I try to capture the feeling of Venice and the magic of a wedding.

When Kate and Collin contacted me for their wedding in Venice I was really pleased, but when I met them at Europa Regina (near calle XXII Marzo the most commercial street in Venice) I was really happy. They are handsome and fine.

We immediatley find a great feeling and we cross Venice walking and taking a lot of pictures.
I can easily say that was aone of my best weddings in Venice.
I'm really a lucky guy, I do anice job and I meet nice people....

Wedding Stresa, details

A nice wedding in Stresa on lake Maggiore. A young american couple more or less 150 guests a fascinating villa with a big and green private park. A great wedding planner a lot of nice fine details. Something as simple as flowers can set the tone for the entire wedding.

If your wedding is held in the warm summer days, remeber to plan on enough cold beverages for your guests, and keep them available throughout the day. It's clear that prospectives in the US are really bad.

I would only say that there must be good, very good reasons to make me working for free, I usually work for free for documentary auto assignement but there is always a feedback.

Working for free could be a one way ticket to close your business as a photographer.

So think about it.

I usually shoot weddings and corporate. This year I was shooting for third time works that some big company gave to photographers that work on little budget than me but at the end the pictures were not what the client was waiting for so they acepted my estimates and I did the works.

A lot of people think taht to be a photographer you only need a camera and a computer but it's not the true. Real photographers love their work and they continue to study and to invest in theri job and instruction.

Photo Tours
Over the years, I've often been asked if I lead photo tours.
I'm busy international photojournalist corporate and wedding photographer, I've not had the time to pursue the idea, and I usually prefer to teach to professional.
Well, recently two friends of mine, Angelo Tondini and Giovanni Mereghetti, who own a successful photo tour business have asked me lead several trips through their photography tour company each year, including Guinea Bissau,Guinea Conakry,Mali,Bangladesh,Oman and Ethiopia.

HDR in wedding and reportage picture

I was taking some picture during a reportage about Polo game,I was looking for some good light, with dramatic contrast.
During last monts I saw some unbelivable light in Fickr Photomatix pool, some of that picture are exagerated and not professional but to an old photographer like me was obvious something new it's happening with HDR and Photomatix and all professional are thinking about.
My first attempt will be in my next photo wedding works. As soon as possible I will prepare new architectural portfolio.

How to get married in Italy

In order to get married in Italy you and two witnesses must appear before the town clerk and declare your intention to get married.
If one or both of you live in Italy then your banns (wedding announcement) must be posted at the town hall for two consecutive Sundays. Four days after the second Sunday the banns are posted you are free to marry. If neither of the couple is Italian or lives in Italy then the posting of banns is not required.

For Non-Italians a civil wedding is highly recommended before having a religious or symbolic ceremony.

For non-Italians wishing a civil marriage in Italy it is highly recommended that they appear before the town registrar at least four days prior to the intended date of the ceremony in order to insure enough time for all documents to be authenticated and the necessary paperwork to be completed.

In general if you are not Italian you will need the following paperwork (please note that the exact papers required vary somewhat depending on your country of residence).

You will need to present your passport or you will need an armed forces identification card.
You will need a birth certificate that is less than six months old. If this is not your first marriage you will need evidence of the termination of your previous marriage.

You and your witnesses will also need to swear in front of an Italian counselor officer in your own country that under the laws of your jurisdiction you have the legal right to marry. You will also have to go your country’s embassy or counselor office in Italy and swear that you have the right to marry.

Minors under 18 years of age need the written consent of a parent or guardian before they may be married.

All paperwork must be translated into Italian by a certified translator and certain documents must have what is known as a Apostille Stamp from the Secretary of State in the state in which you live. Contact your Secretary of State’s office to find out how to obtain this stamp.

With all the paperwork in place it takes anywhere from three to four days to get permission to marry for a civil ceremony held at a town hall.

A Catholic religious ceremony is possible but very difficult to arrange unless you have a civil ceremony first.

A religious marriage is not so easy for non-Italians. If you wish to marry in a non-Catholic church it is almost impossible to do so without first obtaining a civil marriage license; it is highly recommended that you have a civil ceremony first and a religious ceremony afterwards.

This is even true if you are seeking a Catholic ceremony. While it is possible for non-Italians to have a Catholic wedding ceremony in Italy, the number of priests who will conduct marriage ceremonies for non-Italians is shrinking and the practice is frowned upon.

If you have your heart set on a Catholic ceremony it is possible. It is recommended that you talk to your local priest or Archbishop to see if they know of a church in Italy that will perform your ceremony. At the very least you will need a formal letter on church letterhead from your local priest stating that you have fulfilled all Pre Cana procedures and further stating that your church grants permission for the ceremony. Your priest will need to obtain a similar letter from your Archbishop. An entire package, including the two letters plus a copy of your baptism, first communion and confirmation must be sent all together to the priest at the Italian church where you wish to marry. You will also need the original of the marriage encounter with all of the church seals and signatures.

Even after all of this paperwork has been presented, the Italian priest may choose not to perform the ceremony.

A simpler procedure would be to hold a civil ceremony prior to any religious ceremony. A religious ceremony to confirm a civil union is much less complicated to arrange, although it is still recommended that you make all arrangements ahead of time to insure that there are no last minute surprises.

In order to make your life simpler and to relieve yourself of the stress of making the official arrangements, it is highly recommended that you employ a wedding facilitator to take care of all the details for you. Why take the chance of trying to arrange your own wedding when a professional can guarantee to do the job right and relieve you of the headache?

Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in the world in which to marry and to honeymoon, so if your dream has been to be married in Italy, don’t let anything stand in your way.

Wedding in Arese

Claudia and Federico are really nice people...
Unfortunately at Claudia's home the light was really awful...
Low light also to shoot at 1600 ISO and too yellow...
So? Well the only thing was adding a flash light...
I took my Nikon SB - 600 and I went wireless putting the flash upon the library, near the ceiling. So I knew that flash was not visible but light was beautiful…
The bride was really happy (as usual in last ten years)…
I was not so happy and I start to take a look around to reach a better light with flashes.

Wedding in Pallanza lake Maggiore

Pallanza is a garden on the lake Maggiore setting on the Borromean Gulf.
Villa Taranto has famous gardens and the lake is simply nice.
I was here one week ago and... Nice time, nice wedding at Grand Hotel Majestic.
I shoot nice pictures and some nice still life.
Lorenza and Marco were really happy when they saw the photographs.

Wedding photography tips

Quiet days, I take a look at my archive…
A lot of picture, faces and people.
To many weddings…
Well we could start with some useful tips for people that are approaching wedding photography and want to be professionals.

Tip 1
Have a backup gear.
Remember: never ever ever shoot a wedding without backup gear.
Weddings are unique event no way to have a second chance.

Tip 2
Go digital.
The film day for commercial wedding are gone. Pay attention digital photography needs a lot of knowledge, is non so easy as you may think.

Tip 3
Choose brand professional camera (Nikon, Canon or Leica) and remember that you will carry 2 bodies for more or less 8/10 hours. D200, D80 or Eos 400D, Eos 5D are exactly what you need for professional wedding.
Lenses I use on Nikon Body: 12-24mm f4, 17-50mm f2, 50mm f1.4, 70-200mm f2.8.
I also have may SB -600 flash and manfrotto tripod.

Tip 4
Hold enough memories (8 to 12 giga) and batteries (at least 3) for your cameras

Tip 5
Start with a pro working as assistant also for free and prepare your book

Tip 6
Learn a workflow that make you save time (and money)

Tip 7
Shoot everything.
I shoot:

the bride preparing

the decorations

the church interior and exterior

the formal group shots

the guests arriving

the ceremony

the congratulations to the couple

the exit

the arrival at the reception

the hall interior and exterior

Shoot everything. Shoot it well.
After a day of shooting you will be exhausted.

Tip 8
Edit your work.
Go through millions of images you’ve taken and throw out the bad, be super critical.

Build a story

A little bit of Photoshop helps.

Develop your vision. The ‘vision’ is really what separates a good photographer from a great photographer. A lot of photographers place too emphasis on technical aspects of taking pictures and don’t remember that it is their ‘vision’ that sells and not just the fact that they know how to use their equipment.

Wedding Photojournalism
Wedding Photojournalism is often defined by people as "Capturing the moment."
The photographer gives any direction on what to do to the subjects.
Another definition is, is "Telling stories with images."For most of photographers is when the photographer does not interact with the subject in any way.
He tries to capture images in such a way as to tell the viewer what was really going on and to reveal the emotion of the moment.
The difference between the two styles is dramatic.
Working in a photojournalistic style is really the most difficult way for the wedding photographer. But the reward is that your pictures will have a real taste!
A lot of people believe that you can not learn this style that you must have it mixed up in your eye… I shoot for newspaper, customers, photo agencies, fashion and still life, photography is, for me, like walking like breathing… Also when I use flashes I will be never rude.
Catching the right moment in wedding pictures is a fraction of a second, a dramatic difference.

Techniques and capabilities work together in my mind.
